| MEDVAMC is currently seeking a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist. Nursing Informatics is the specialty that integrated nursing science, computer science and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice. Nursing informatics facilitates the integration of data, information, knowledge and settings. This support is accomplished though the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology. The goal of nursing informatics is to improve the health of populations, communities, families, and individuals by optimizing information management and communication. These activities include the design and use of informatics solutions and technology to support all areas of nursing and health care, including, but not limited to, the direct provision of care, establishing effective administrative systems, managing and delivering education experiences, enhancing lifelong learning, and supporting nursing research. Informatics solution is a generic term used in this document to describe an application, product, method, tool, workflow change, or other recommendation an informatics nurse makes after identifying and analyzing an issue. An informatics solution may encompass technology and non-technology elements such as developing a database, developing requirements for a new application, advocating the utilization of standard terminologies, designing informatics curricula, tailoring an application to a particular environment, describing information flow in a process redesign, creating newly re-engineered processes, or creating a structure for information presentation. The following are the core overarching principles adhered to by the informatics nurse includes but are not limited to: Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing informatics process when providing and/or supervising nurse informaticists. Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary teams for clinical documentation purposes. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs. Possesses thorough knowledge of utilization management processes, clinical documentation requirements, current standards of care, and compliance guidelines. Accountable for utilizing critical thinking skills and sound judgment to ensure positive outcomes, maximizing third-party collections and delivering quality performance improvement activities. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice. Will provide support at the unit level, the service level, and the organizational level. Incorporates theories, principles, and concepts from appropriate sciences into informatics practice. Examples may include information, systems, and change theories. Principles and concepts may include project management, implementation methods, workflow analysis, process redesign, organizational culture, or database structures. Integration of ergonomics and human-computer interaction (HCI) principles into informatics solution design, development, selection, implementation and evaluation. Systematically determines the social, legal, regulatory, and ethical impact of an informatics solution on nursing and health care. Practice is based on the nursing process and evidence based research. Core competencies will depend on the individual role and competency checklist.
