The Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist (TRT) operates independently, and as a team member, to coordinate and perform responsibly all therapeutic radiation treatments. These treatments are performed with and without 3D treatment planning, IMRT, CT simulation and other techniques to achieve either a biological cure of disease or improvement in the quality of the remainder of the patient's life. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs a simulation verification before the first treatment is administered. Accurately reproduces initial simulation set-up, with proper patient alignment/positioning and immobilizing devices. Performs the following verifications for isocenter accuracy, treatment field accuracy, multi-leaf collimator accuracy, electron blocking when pertinent, monitor units and dose as a part of the initial/daily timeout. Obtains isocenter verification as needed using cone beam CT and or the use of the on-board imaging system. Utilizes electronic radiation treatment chart for set-up instructions, field size, field shaping, bolus, treatment technique and SSD. Employs any necessary accessory devices, including wedges, bolus, collimate or mount for electron cones, and electron blocks. Verifies correct field size and multi-leaf collimation. Routinely takes port/verification films on patients under radiation treatment to maintain record of treatment accuracy in accordance to departmental procedures, checks, and verifies any changes in accordance with the physician's request. Promptly sends alerts to physicist in patient's electronic treatment chart with any change in treatment including patients SSD reading, change in field measurements, adjustments to position of treatment field or patient's treatment status if not treated or partially treated to make correction's in the treatment calendar, calculations or prescription as needed. Continually keeping current with new developments in the field of radiation therapy and being able to utilize the latest technologies available and properly trained. Knowledge of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NCR) regulations. Follows established safety practices and reports to supervisor promptly regarding unsafe conditions, unsafe practices or any occupational illness or injury sustained. Adheres to all safety and health standards, regulations, work practices and uses proper protective equipment as required. Participates in quality assurance (QA) activities to include ACR activities for accreditation. Other duties as assigned.
