This position is located in Employee Occupational Health Department within the Ambulatory Service at the Albany VA Medical Center, New York. The Employee Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner's primary purpose is to provide high quality care to fellow employees within the scope of occupational medicine and meet the needs of patients while supporting VHA mission. The health care services expected to be provided include, though are not limited to; pre-employment and other clearance examinations, assessment for immunizations, implementing/coordinating the employee influenza and other vaccination programs, work-related injury, illness at work and occupational health exposure assessment, return to work assessment and telehealth visits. The provider will work closely with infection control, safety officer, industrial hygienist and worker's comp representatives. The position reports to the Deputy Chief of Staff and collaborates with members of other services, including specialist physicians and other staff for appropriate referrals, human resources support and Primary Care providers. He/she will provide clinical, technical, specialized, and/or administrative support as common to all administrative and clinical staff assigned to this area. GENERAL DUTIES: -Performs a comprehensive health history and physical examination tailored to the pre-employment clearance or reason for visit .-Adapts assessment tools and techniques according to individual patient needs for scheduled and unscheduled visits. -Determines the need for laboratory or imaging orders, receives and interprets the appropriate diagnostic test results. -Analyzes and synthesizes data from multiple sources to develop a differential and working diagnosis. -Applies knowledge and best practice standards in selecting a treatment plan or recommendation to treat conditions, diseases, disorders and injuries within the NP's scope of practice and clinical practice setting. - Communicates verbally and in writing, history, physical assessment findings, diagnosis, and any necessary referral or treatment plans .- Communicates progress and treatment options with the patient and other members of the team, when indicated. - Consults with other health care providers in an appropriate and timely manner. - Critically appraises and applies current, relevant research into clinical practice from an evidence-based framework. - Assesses aggregate patient needs by compiling qualitative and quantitative information about clinical programs using electronic or paper reporting tools. - Participates in the development of health promotion/prevention programs based on assessed needs, culture and evidence-based strategies and available resources for patients who are healthy or have acute or chronic conditions in collaboration with other clinical services. - Applies principles of teaching and learning when providing health education to employees and other patients. - Monitors, evaluates and modifies health promotion/prevention programs in partnership with the patient and other members of the health care team .- Encourages client to take responsibility for maintaining and/or improving health by increasing knowledge of, control over, and influence on, health determinants. - Accepts sole responsibility and accountability for all actions taken within his or her scope of practice. - Incorporates professional, legal, and ethical decision-making guidelines into the practice of Medicine. - Demonstrates leadership in clinical practice to meet multiple health care needs. - Participates in interdisciplinary, and/or inter-professional quality improvement and/or meetings that relates to her/his practice. - Accepts personal responsibility for ongoing professional development related his/her competence, including, but not limited to, continuing education related to prescriptive authority and health management. -Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, families, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. -Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately. -Plans, organizes, directs and supervises activities of others to complete assignments in a safe and timely manner Work Schedule: Monday- Friday; 8am- 4:30pm Financial Discloser Report: Not required This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
