JOB DESCRIPTION

Receiving general direction from the Biorepository Director, the Biorepository Lab Manager is responsible for overall program oversight and operations of the new UTMB biorepository. This position plays a key role, in coordinating, managing, and tracking biospecimen collection and interacting with researchers requesting and receiving samples from the biorepository. The Biorepository Manager will be involved in developing and implementing relevant quality, regulatory, and operational policies and procedures related to biospecimen management. The manager will supervise biorepository staff activities and manage inventory. Drawing on a broad understanding of hospital and research practices and policies and displaying a high degree of initiative and judgment, the Biorepository Manager will oversee a wide range of programmatic issues.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Responsible for executing the procedural, managerial, and policy decisions for the UTMB Biorepository under the direction of the Biorepository Director.
• Participates in the creation of new and the modification of existing laboratory policies and procedures pertaining to the biorepository.
• Coordinates all project activities related to the biorepository laboratory and undertakes quality assurance programs.
• Participates in biospecimen or clinical research committees, including the Biorepository Oversight, Advisory, and Utilization Committees.
• Responsible for Biorepository program development, fiscal management, and budgeting, with the support from Laboratory Administration and Clinical Research.
• Participates in cost containment measures to manage the lab efficiently.
• Participates in strategic planning, partnership/collaboration development, and data collection and reporting.
• Coordinates with UT System Health Biobank Consortium on database infrastructure to facilitate biospecimen sharing among UT System institutions.
• Maintains up-to-date best practices and participates in local and international professional organizations, as appropriate.
• Maintains knowledge of regulatory environment governing biorepository acquisition and distribution.
• Manages laboratory space, equipment ordering and maintenance requirements.
• Coordinates resources with staff and other departments to facilitate internal and external research collaborations.
• Provides customer service and monitors customer satisfaction with both internal and external investigators that utilize the biorepository.
• Responsible for regular and ad hoc reporting on biospecimen inventory, progress, activities, and impact of the Biorepository.
• Participates in and supports the processes related to hiring, training, and performance of biorepository staff.
• Models behavior to promote teamwork, professional staff interactions, and a safe work environment.
• Responsible for supervising 1-3 FTE Biorepository staff members, (e.g., biobank histotechnicians and research coordinators).
• Responsible for training and supervising staff on biorepository best practices.
