Perform a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Job duties are dependent on the laboratory and may be composed of a combination of the following duties and responsibilities related to the specialization. Tasks are performed according to written procedures and policies with careful monitoring of quality control and quality assurance practices.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Medical Laboratory Scientist, Advanced
May perform any or all of the following duties without direct supervision:
Use manual and automated equipment to perform analytical tests using the following instruments and assay methods.
Perform tests for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease using standard techniques, processes and equipment, including all or some of the following assays, depending on shift and work bench assignments:
ADAMTS13 Panel
Cold Agglutinin Titer
Donath -Landsteiner
EnhancedDAT
Platelet Antibodies, Drug Induced
Platelet Antibody - Direct
Platelet Antibody-Indirect
Platelet Function Assay
PNH Panel
Calibrate, clean and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and test equipment and glassware.
Prepare, label, store and maintain laboratory supply of chemicals, reagents, controls, supplies and glassware as appropriate.
Receive specimens into the Platelet Antibody Laboratory and process appropriately for the requested assays. This is to include but not limited to receiving the specimen in-lab in the LIS.
Appropriately prepare samples for testing, including any centrifugation or additional processing that is required for the ordered assay.
Participate in specimen collection when required according to test requested; maintain responsibility for patient identification, specimen labeling and collection verification, or instructing patients or other healthcare providers in collection and preservation techniques for blood samples for analysis.
Act as a person in charge (PIC) as well as a resource person/role model, as per guidelines determined by laboratory management. Participate in various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, training, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
Take appropriate steps to trouble shoot and resolve problems or issues with samples or instrumentation.
Understand and comply with laboratory Quality Control and Quality Assurance policies and procedures for instrumentation and testing.
Recognize Quality Control shifts and trends and take appropriate action whenever necessary.
Maintain detailed records of tests performed and report laboratory test results to appropriate personnel.
Utilize various hospital and laboratory information systems and software, including but not limited to Beaker, Duke@Work, SoftTech, Outlook (email), API, SRS reporting and ServiceNow.
Set up, evaluate and operate current and new equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory tests and assume adequate responsibility to maintain operations including preventive maintenance.
Participate in the orientation, training and evaluation of the performance of new personnel and students.
Interact in a professional and courteous manner with doctors, nurses, and other personnel to provide technical guidance and address concerns.
Serve as the Platelet Antibody Laboratory's Diversity Committee Representative.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience involving patient contact, customer service in a medical setting, strong communication skills both verbal and written.
Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
Working knowledge of laboratory and hospital computer systems is helpful.
Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling.
Ability to demonstrate required dexterity, knowledge, and ability to complete assigned laboratory tasks and skills, attention to detail and compliance with all appropriate regulatory and safety requirements.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Ability to plan and refine procedures for use in Platelet Antibody testing.
Ability to make accurate observations and prepare written reports.
Ability to train, orient and evaluate the job performance of personnel and students.
Must have strong written communication skills.
Level Characteristics
Act as a General Supervisor (in the absence of the Lab Supervisor or Analytical Specialist) by providing daily supervision and/or oversight of the laboratory operation and personnel performing testing and reporting results.
Provide direct supervision of all Platelet Antibody testing.
Monitoring testing to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
Responsibilities delegated from the director or technical supervisor that include assuring remedial action is taken and documented whenever tests systems deviate from established performance specifications.
Ensure that patient testing results are not reported until corrective action has been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
Participate in the Orientation of all employees.
Participate in the annual evaluation, competency testing and documentation for all testing personnel.
Promotion to this level is dependent upon successful completion of leadership activities within the Clinical Ladder. Requires annual maintenance. Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology. Generalist certification required for General labs. Generalist/Specialty certification required for specialty labs. Minimum educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case by case basis at the discretion of the CLIA director as long as minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.
Experience
Two years experience as a certified MLS.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Generalist/Specialty Certification by a nationally recognized board/agency (required). Certification will vary depending on laboratory. Advanced degree (MS or higher) accepted in lieu of certification.
