The Trauma Program Manager, in partnership with the Trauma Medical Director, is accountable for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the trauma program (coordinating all trauma-related services, clinical, education (in-house and public), performance improvement, research, injury prevention, trauma registry) to ensure compliance with American College of Surgeons (ACS) and/or Department of Health Services for the State of Texas designation requirements.
This role is for Level 3 and 4 designated trauma centers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
Clinical: Directs the delivery of comprehensive trauma care through the coordination and provision of experienced direct or indirect patient care, from admission until discharge, in partnership with all members of the trauma team to ensure quality physical and psychological care, as well as effective continuity of care.
Clinical: Monitors and evaluates trauma activation process and trauma care compliance with protocols from admission to discharge to resolve quality care, educational needs and/or performance improvement needs.
Administration/Management: Is accountable for the day to day activities of the trauma department and maintains the trauma budget. Supervises and evaluates performance of the trauma staff, in some cases including the Trauma Registry, PI, Outreach, Education and Administrative staff. Monitors and evaluates trauma registry process in partnership with the Trauma Registrar(s), and ensures chart audits are completed as recommended by ACS and/or the Department of Health Services for the State of Texas to ensure quality data.
Administration/Management: Develops, implements, reviews and revises the Trauma Strategic Plan, trauma program plans, policies, protocols and standards of care in partnership with the Trauma Medical Director and the Trauma Operations Committee, including the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Program process and quality indicators in partnership with the Trauma Medical Director and Hospital Quality Liaison.
Administration/Management: For Level 3 Trauma Facilities, if applicable, is accountable for day to day trauma registry activities; and for the program requirements, data entry, analytics, and PI activities related to the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP).
Consultant: Acts as a liaison resource to multidisciplinary staff (pre-hospital, nursing, case managers, physicians, trauma registry, trauma staff, social workers, hospital quality department, managers, ancillary staff, ED, ICU, OR, floors, rehab, etc.) regarding use of equipment, procedures and quality trauma care.
Education/Outreach/Prevention: Directs and monitors the development, implementation and evaluation of trauma education activities such as TNCC, ENPC, ATLS in-services, etc. in partnership with the Trauma Clinical Coordinator(s) and/or course director(s), including the CME and CEU process for specific continuing education activities related to the Trauma Program.
Education/Outreach/Prevention: Directs, monitors and participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of trauma injury prevention program, including attending hospital committee meetings and community meetings related to trauma education, trauma outreach, and injury prevention as needed, and ensuring injury prevention needs assessment is performed from trauma registry data.
Research/Publication: Facilitates and participates as requested.
Professional Growth: Seeks new information to broaden knowledge base and keep practice current by attending educational programs, conferences and in-services related to trauma care and will maintain the annual trauma education requirements as set forth by the State of Texas and the American College of Surgeons.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
Advanced knowledge of Trauma care terminology, and standards.
Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care applicable to the area of assignment.
Knowledge of medical terminology; methods and practices of health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention and management; medications and drugs, common dosages, their physical and physiological effects, and possible adverse reactions.
Knowledge of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
Must be able to communicate thoughts clearly; both verbally and in writing.
Ability to provide age-specific, quality, patient-centered care to all patients through the nursing process and standards of nursing practice with care and respect for the diversity of human experience and to develop, evaluate, implement and, as necessary, modify a patient care plan to meet the needs of separate patients.
Ability to make operational steps around how work gets done - quality and productivity standards, measurable goals for employees and project teams, etc.
Ability to use broader targets to resolve how best to use resources to meet schedules and goals.
Ability to make or approve effective hiring and termination conclusions.
Ability to evaluate and recommend changes to policies, and establish procedures that affect the managed organization.
General computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.
Previous management experience preferred.
Previous trauma program experience preferred.
Teaching and leadership experience preferred.
Instructor status in one of the following preferred: TNCC/ATCN/ENPC.
