This position is located in Voluntary Services at VA Salt Lake City Health Care System Escort Office. This position involves public contact and is expected to manage and coordinate assignments in the Escort Office (i.e. patient transport services) and provide clerical assistance as needed within the Voluntary Service Office. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. This Health Aid and Technician Series, 0640, has individual occupational requirements, as described below: Individual Occupational Requirements: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Or, Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. And, Specialized Experience GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience typically include but are not limited to: Having knowledge of human anatomy. Possessing knowledge to recognize life threatening situations and acting to correct them. Assisting licensed personnel in behavioral/psychiatric situations. Providing clerical administrative support coordination. Maintaining records/charts. Answering phones and directing phone calls to appropriate person/area. ["Duties include, but are not limited to: Coordinator provides timely direction regarding proper methods of patient transports for our adult and geriatric patients to and from units, clinics, and facilities within VASLCHCS and the local community for treatment if a licensed practical nurse (LPN) is not required. Assist in the distribution and the balance of workload among employees/volunteers in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assure that each employee/volunteer has enough work to keep busy. Manage and coordinate work schedules for Escort volunteers, help interview/screen for potential volunteer candidates. Train new volunteers and Health Aids on procedures and practices. Provide daily report on performance to Voluntary Service Manager. Keep in touch with the status and progress of work, and make day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise, such as backlogs which cannot be disposed of promptly. Estimate and report on expected time of completion of work and maintain records of work accomplishments and time expended and prepare production reports as requested. Instruct employees/volunteers in specific tasks and job techniques and make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies. Give on-the-job training to new employees/volunteers in accordance with established procedures and practices. Carefully observes and monitors patients who are on IV's or oxygen and reports it to the registered nurse at destination. Recognizes emergency situations (i.e., codes, disasters, fire and safety issues) and takes appropriate and immediate action. Can successfully perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Transports patients with severe physical and emotional conditions from psychiatric units to scheduled appointments with medical, surgical, and physical treatment and returns them to their respective ward. Encounters with all levels of physical and emotional patients and families are handled in a courteous and tactful manner and any customer service compliant is easily resolved. Carefully observes patients during transport for signs of distress. Provides escort assistance to outpatients arriving at the medical center for treatment. Transport deceased veterans from wards/units to the morgue.
